What I learned in Vegas: Tip #2

Day 3 Guest Lecturers: Joe Vigil and Michael Smith

Yesterday was a long, but great day!  We started of the morning with a test on Sports Psychology followed by 4 hours of lecture on Bio-mechanics.  After about 45 mins. for dinner we held our 1st event specific course for 2 hours in the evening.  This was cool!  I finally got the chance to geek out on just distance stuff with coaches from around the nation.  After lecture, I studied for my bio exam for about 2 hours then fell asleep on my book.

After a quick nights sleep, I was up again this morning at 6am to grab a Starbucks and cram from the bio exam.  I knew I missed two questions, but had to wait in anticipation all morning to find out the final results.  My hard work paid off...I passed!  So, after studying my butt off, I have passed all 4 USATF Level 2 tests with only one event presentation left to give this Saturday.  Until then, I get the chance to sit back and listen to some of the best coaches in the nation (might I say all-time), teach us the ins and outs of endurance.

Since I missed yesterday's "Tip of the Day", I thought I would make up for it and share a few things from today's lectures.
  1. There are 58 million runners in the US (not including those in fitness classes that run occasionally).  You are part of the largest fitness activity group in the world.  Be proud of what you do!
  2. The medals and PRs will fade.  The one thing that holds true, is friendship.
  3. An 18 year old in Kenya has about 18,000 miles more under his belt than an 18 year old in the USA.
  4. Americans on average are currently burning around 600-700 calories a day less than the generation before us.

Joe Vigil's 3 Things to Live By:
  1. Do endurance training daily
  2. Eat as if you are a poor person
  3. Don't let your mind go to sea (every day have a purpose, try to learn something every day)
