When I say "fast and relaxed", I'm not sure everyone understands what I mean. I've seen some of you slow down, some of you speed up, and some who look like I'm speaking in Bulgarian! So here is my Tip of the Week! Above is the full replay of the Men's 10,000m race at this past years Olympics in London. Check out the following things while watching the video to better understand what I mean when I say "fast and relaxed":
- Look how smooth the runners look while racing. Even though they are running at fast speeds, they are not straining.
- Notice their arm swings. They don't swing across their bodies or exaggerate them. It is a relaxed arm movement. Also, notice how the elbows drive back in the arm swing.
- Lastly, watch how patient Farah (1st) and Rupp (2nd) are in the race. They are alert during the race and trust their training to kick just at the right time. They not only had the physical strength, but also the mental toughness to push their bodies, and the race, when the muscles are hurting.
